Randi Quale and Laurie Bromagen – Kettering College

“Last year, a faculty member was suddenly diagnosed with an acute case of Leukemia which sent them directly to the hospital that day. The Science and Math department at Kettering College found themselves in a real dilemma— how would we suddenly cover the courses and labs this team member had been teaching, right in the middle of the term? That same day, Randi Quale and Laurie Bromagen stepped up to the plate and agreed to make sure all the courses and material were covered, while continuing to teach their full-time load in the department. One of the main motivators in their decision to do this was to make the change as least disruptive as possible for the students who were in the middle of a term. They did this for the remaining ten weeks of the winter term, which also turned out to be the term we switched to remote instruction online. These two faculty members were not only converting their own course material to the new delivery method, but they also their colleague’s course material! Because of the uncertainty of this faculty member’s situation and the short notice to find other full-time faculty to teach these courses, both Randi and Laurie agreed to take on all their colleague’s course work for the coming 2020-21 academic year in the fall and winter terms. Each one of them took on approximately 30% more work for the past academic year to make it a good experience for the students, save the college adjunct costs, keep the same assured high quality of instruction, and give the Science and Math department and the Human Biology department time to determine how to move forward. They took on this extra work without knowing what the 2021 academic year would ultimately be like. As their department chair, I cannot tell you how helpful, valuable, and supportive they were throughout the process and with the students they served. They are truly valuable and quality faculty that make the Science and Math department very proud. Kettering College has two gems in Randi Quale and Laurie Bromagen as faculty members who went above and beyond the call of duty!”
