Epic Refuel and the Nursing Brain: Reimagining EMRs and Nursing Documentation

Read Time: 2 mins

The Epic Refuel project brought employees across Kettering Health together with the goal of aligning our Epic workflows with industry best practice.
The program looked at improvement opportunities across our health system. The figure below provides an overview of the types of amazing improvements that have been made—and shows only a small part of the huge impact the Refuel project has had on Kettering Health.

During Refuel, we reimagined nursing documentation by implementing the Nursing Brain, a one-stop-shop for Nursing that significantly reduces the amount of time our nurses spend in documentation and increases the time they can spend providing exceptional care.

On the Brain, nurses can view tasks in a timeline format, and documentation can be done easily on one screen. Since launching in February 2021, Kettering Health nurses on Med/Surg units saved, on average, 47 minutes per day, and Intensive Care documentation was reduced by 40 minutes a day.

That’s enough time to refuel or spend a little extra time with their patients!
In total, nurses spent over 200,000 extra hours bedside in 2021!

“We know changing workflow and processes are challenging,” said Jen Shull. “But these results prove that the challenge is worth the outcome, and we’re thankful for each nurse who implements the advantages of the Brain.”

So far, over 50% of our nursing staff have adopted the Brain, and we encourage those who haven’t to work toward utilizing this great new resource.
