Read Time: 1 min

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” is considered the founder of modern nursing. A nurse during the Crimean War, Nightingale was influential in establishing many of the sanitation practices utilized today, and her documentation of soldier’s deaths due to preventable diseases proved the validity and need for better cleanliness and sanitation in hospitals.

Her reputation also elevated the nursing profession to one of high merit, and her impact on culture was great—many women, including those from upper-class families, enrolled in nursing school due to her example.
