Read Time: 2 mins

Congratulations to Judy Taylor, who was named Kettering Behavioral Medicine Center’s September Employee of the Month! Judy works in Adult Psych at the hospital.

The Employee of the Month Award recognizes the people you love to work with. These winners show exceptional performance as defined by the network’s Standards of Behavior, live out the network’s values, and demonstrate the healing presence practices outlined in Called to Care. Judy was nominated by two fellow employees, and you can read the nomination stories below:

“Patient-focused. Sacred work. ICARE. These are more than just training slogans, they are character descriptions. I would like to nominate Judy Taylor as a Network Star for the way she demonstrated what those words look like in action. In behavioral health, the unexpected is a part of life. When Judy went to check on one of her patients, she did not expect the patient to leap out of bed and put his hands around her throat. She was working to extricate herself from his grip and push her emergency button when she heard the patient say, ‘I’m scared.’ At that point, Judy knew she was not being attacked. She was being held on to, and the patient was afraid of the pain he was feeling. The patient slumped to the floor and Judy held on to him to ease his fall. As the response team assembled, Judy Judy stayed seated on the floor, focusing on the patient, maintaining eye contact and offering comforting words. Judy didn’t know at the time that she was giving end of life care. The patient did not recover. It’s never easy to lose a patient, but when I reflect on the events, I see Judy sitting on the floor, talking to the patient, holding his hand, and I am comforted, even as the patient was comforted In that moment, Judy put into practice all the values and principles we talk about and exemplified sacred work.”

“I just wanted to put my two cents in for nominating Judy Taylor for employee of the month in regards to her extraordinary care for a patient during his last moments. A co-worker and I were talking, and we both agreed that she showed genuine compassion for her fellow human being in his most dire moment of need. I can’t think of anybody more deserving of this reward in recent months than her.”
