Congratulations to Karen Swanger, who was named Sycamore Medical Center’s October Employee of the Month! Karen works in Patient Relations at the hospital.
The Employee of the Month Award recognizes the people you love to work with. These winners show exceptional performance as defined by the network’s Standards of Behavior, live out the network’s values, and demonstrate the healing presence practices outlined in Called to Care. Karen was nominated by a fellow employee, and you can read the nomination story below:
“Karen exemplifies the Patient Relations role by going above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. In this particular instance, we had a patient’s father come into HR. Understandably, the gentleman was upset and he was raising his voice and demanding to speak to someone that he could file a complaint to. We originally asked the man to have a seat in our lobby while we went and got Karen. Karen was more than happy to help and she did an excellent job of de-escalating the situation and calming him. By the end of the conversation, they both were joking and he expressed his gratitude to her for listening. Karen, being the patient relations rep for Sycamore Medical Center, did not have an obligation to sit with the gentleman and hear him out all while taking detailed notes and getting his information since LifeCare has their own patient relations. However, she took it upon herself to see to it that the gentleman was heard and put into contact with the correct individual. We believe that Karen deserves this recognition as she just as easily could have said this is not her area or her responsibility but instead she assisted with a uncomfortable situation gracefully and respectfully.”
