Maternity Services at Fort Hamilton Expand to Serve Community Needs

Read Time: 1 min

As more patients seek care from the maternity services at Fort Hamilton Hospital, the facility is undergoing renovations to expand capacity.

Fort Hamilton currently holds a 17-bed LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum) care unit and a six-bed open-bay special care nursery. To serve our patient needs, the department will be expanding to eight private rooms in the Level IIB special care nursery. The renovation is expected to be completed this spring.

Rooms in the special care nursery are used for infants experiencing issues such as substance withdrawal prematurity, respiratory problems, or feeding problems. The room will have more space and privacy for families to spend time with their new babies and promote developmental care.

“Patients and families prefer the private room model in the special care nursery,” says Nicole Lagedrost, clinical nurse manager over Labor and Delivery at Fort Hamilton. “Mothers will remain in their postpartum room until they are discharged. After discharge, they will be able to visit their baby at any time and spend time together in a private setting.”
