PAPR Cleaning Guidelines

Read Time: 1 min

PAPRs are an alternative respirator that can be worn by staff and providers who are not fit tested for wearing N-95s or who prefer wearing a PAPR to a N-95. They are reusable from person to person and must be cared for as follows:

  • Inspect the hood prior to use for tears or other damage. Replace the hood if any damage is seen and notify the department manager so that a replacement hood can be ordered.
  • After use, remove the PAPR outside the room and perform hand hygiene.
  • Don clean gloves and use a hospital-approved disinfectant wipe to clean/disinfect the hood, battery pack, and breathing hose, making sure that the components stay wet for the appropriate contact time for the disinfectant without over-saturating. Refer to the disinfectant product label for the product’s contact time.
  • Bleach-containing wipes should only be used for cleaning/disinfection when the PAPR is used in rooms where patients are in contact with handwashing isolation, as bleach may cause premature damage to the PAPR components. If bleach-containing wipes are used, the disinfectant should be allowed to sit for the appropriate contact time, followed by a rinse with a water-moistened wipe for the PAPR components.
  • Allow the PAPR hood to air dry upright on a clean surface before storing in the clean supply room.
  • Place all rechargeable battery packs on their chargers after the battery pack has dried.
