PPE Protocol for Airway Procedures

INTRAOPERATIVE PATIENT CARE

  • Either an N95 mask or powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR), if unable to wear the N95, will be worn by all staff members and physicians when performing one of the following procedures:
    • Tracheostomy
    • Bronchoscopy
    • EGD
    • Lung Resection
    • Laryngeal Surgery
    • Oropharyngeal Surgery
      • The designated process to obtain N95 masks or PAPR for each facility is:
        • Kettering: Anesthesia Staff: Anesthesia Controls Distribution – OR Staff: From OR Control Desk
        • Grandview: Contact Material’s Distribution 937-723-3243 for All Staff
        • Soin: Kept on OR Covid-19 Cart for All Staff
        • Fort Hamilton: In Director’s Office – Contact Joe Hooper, Donna Barker, or Dr. Churchwell for access.  for Staff
        • Southview: Kept in Anesthesia Block Cart for All Staff
  • In addition to an N95 mask, or PAPR, the following PPE should be worn when performing a procedure listed above:
    • A face shield or goggles.
    • A gown.
    • Gloves.
  • N95 masks and/or PAPR devices will be available to all anesthesia staff when manipulating a patient’s airway.  This includes all procedures where an airway will be manipulated and is not limited to suspected/positive COVID-19 patients.
    • All non-anesthesia staff will continue wear standard PPE for all other procedures that are not suspected, or positive for COVID-19.
