Dayton Tornado Relief Effort: How to Help

Read Time: 3 mins

Thousands of people in our community were recently impacted by severe weather events, and we know many of our own employees and their families have been significantly affected by those storms.

Supporting our people

We are aware of approximately 150 team members who have been impacted, including at least five who experienced a total loss of their home and belongings, and we know there are others.

A special fund has been set up by the Grandview Foundation, with donations being distributed and used to support all network employees who have been affected by the tornadoes. This program is similar to our current Employee Assistance Fund programs, but it is designed to address this specific circumstance in an expedited way.

This fund would help provide:

  • Housing assistance
  • Utility bills
  • Food (grocery store gift cards)
  • Fuel cards
  • Transportation
  • PTO replenishment

For resources in our community, click here to view flyers provided by the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association.

As of June 25, employees have donated $41,536 to the relief fund, and the network has donated $50,000. If you would like to donate to the fund and support your Kettering Health Network team members, you can do so through one of the options below:

  • Payroll deduction or online donation: Click here to donate. Select “KHN Tornado Relief Fund” in the dropdown box.
  • Check: Send checks payable to Grandview Foundation to 405 W. Grand Ave., Dayton, OH 45405

Because this severe weather event has been declared a national disaster, we are now also able to accept PTO donations online as part of our tornado relief effort. To donate PTO, click here and then click “PTO Donation for KHN Tornado Relief.” PTO donations made through this portal will be distributed to those in need through our tornado relief process and cannot be designated for a specific individual.

Donations can be made in eight-hour increments, and any remaining donated hours that are not used for tornado relief will be transferred to our general PTO donation bank and used to support employees through our normal PTO donation process.

Supporting our community

Thank you to all employees who supported our community donation drive! Because of your generosity, we have compiled a large supply of goods that now need to be sorted and distributed to local agencies and churches that are serving as pick-up sites for families and individuals in need. We are looking for volunteers to help sort the goods and package them in an easily transportable fashion.

You can volunteer during the dates and times below:

  • July 9: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • July 10: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • July 11: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

We will provide the location, packing supplies, and means to get the items distributed–we just need your helping hands! To sign up for a volunteer slot, email Courtney Haas at courtney.haas@ketteringhealth.org

Employees choosing to take PTO to participate on these volunteer dates will receive a 1:1 PTO match for time spent volunteering (ex: If you take two hours of PTO, the network will match your PTO with an additional two hours). In order to do this, please contact your supervisor so they can approve the time off and sign this form. This will then be sent to Courtney Haas for processing. The hours accredited to this volunteer opportunity will be taken out of the maximum number that employees are eligible for each year as stated in the Missions PTO Match Policy.
