Suspending Vaccinations in Inpatient and Emergency Departments

Read Time: 1 min

Over the past four months, we have been offering COVID-19 vaccines to patients in both inpatient settings and hospital-based emergency departments. We have been carefully assessing this program’s impacts and results.

So far, we have vaccinated 140 individuals, which is about two or three people a day across all our sites. Given this low volume, the way the vaccine is provided (multi-dose vials), and the limitations on storage (short expiration dating), we have unfortunately wasted a significant number of doses.

Given the widespread availability of the vaccine in the community and our obligation to minimize our waste of the vaccine that could be provided to others, we have decided to suspend the COVID-19 vaccine for acute care and hospital ED patient use effective November 11. This will also no longer be available to order in Epic on the effective date.
