Updated Masking Guidance for Employees Working at Healthcare Facilities

Read Time: 2 mins

Updated masking guidance for employees working at our healthcare facilities include

  • Medical Centers
  • Clinics
  • Physicians’/Providers’ offices

We continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 transmission rates published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Following the CDC’s infection prevention and control recommendations applicable to healthcare facilities, and to remain compliant with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) conditions of participation, we are updating our masking requirements for the well-defined areas of our healthcare facilities restricted from patient access.

This includes

  • Employee-only conference rooms
  • Break rooms
  • Non-patient/guest-facing departments and/or suites

Employees up-to-date with all COVID-19 vaccine doses (including boosters) may choose not to wear masks and/or physically distance in healthcare facilities where patients are not allowed when the transmission level for the county where the healthcare facility is located remains moderate or low (YELLOW OR BLUE).

Employees not up-to-date with all COVID-19 vaccine doses must continue to mask and socially distance.

ALL EMPLOYEES within a healthcare facility must continue to mask and socially distance when they are in areas where they could encounter patients, such as common halls, corridors, and the cafeteria.

The CDC updates the COVID-19 transmission levels daily, and if counties move from low or moderate transmission levels to substantial or high transmission levels, we will be required to reinstate masking and social distancing in all areas of our healthcare facilities in that county immediately, including areas restricted from patient access.

As a reminder, if you have not submitted your COVID-19 vaccination card showing you have received the COVID-19 booster, you must do so.  You can submit that information to EHPrograms@ketteringhealth.org. Otherwise, you are not considered “up-to-date” with all COVID-19 vaccinations.

NOTE: This updated guidance applies only to our healthcare facilities and NOT administrative buildings. The guidance we communicated on February 24 to employees working in administrative buildings remains in effect.

NOTE: Below is a snapshot that will be sent to leaders daily

  • Black, Blue, Yellow: Option to not socially distance and mask in areas where patients/visitors do not have access and employee submits proof of fully vaccinated to Employee Health.
  • Orange, Red: Masking and social distancing required in all areas

NOTE: Employees not fully vaccinated and/or have a waiver must mask and socially distance.
