Update to Plasma Donation Process

Read Time: 1 min

As we move forward into the recovery phase of COVID-19 response, it has become necessary to update our processes in an effort to reallocate resources.  There is some evidence that plasma obtained from recovered patients may help when given to another seriously ill patient. In the Dayton region we are hoping to build a supply of plasma from individuals who have recovered from this infection.  In an effort to meet the needs of potential demand we have updated our processes:

  1. Patient tests positive—inpatient or outpatient
  2. A letter from Dr. Weinstein is sent that includes pertinent plasma donation information as well as a screening form that will allow the patient self-initiate screening
  3. If they meet criteria and are willing to donate, they are instructed to contact Infection Control number and leave a message with name and date of birth
  4. Infection Control then completes online referral form for Community Blood Center of Dayton (CBC)
  5. CBC contacts donor and schedules plasma donation

Please do not hesitate to contact Infection Control at (937) 762-5839 with any questions or concerns.  The phone line is no longer staffed daily, but voicemail is being checked periodically throughout the day and messages will be returned within the next business day.
